What to Bring to a Street Photography Workshop

Updated: Aug 13

What to Bring to a Street Photography Workshop

Your first street photography workshop should be exciting—not stressful.

One of the easiest ways to make the experience more enjoyable is to prepare beforehand.

The good news is that you don't need a huge camera bag.

Here's what you actually need.

1. Your Camera

Bring the camera you're comfortable using.

This could be:

  • Mirrorless camera

  • DSLR

  • Compact camera

  • Film camera

  • Smartphone, if the workshop permits it

The goal is to learn photography, not show off equipment.

2. A Familiar Lens

If you're using interchangeable lenses, choose something you already understand.

A 35mm or 50mm lens can be particularly versatile for street photography.

3. Fully Charged Batteries

This sounds obvious, but it's one of the easiest things to forget.

Charge your battery before leaving.

If possible, bring a spare.

4. Memory Cards

Make sure you have enough storage.

It's better to have more space than to discover halfway through the workshop that your card is full.

5. Comfortable Shoes

Street photography often involves walking.

Wear shoes that you can comfortably use for several hours.

6. Weather-Appropriate Clothing

Los Angeles weather can vary.

Dress comfortably and consider the conditions for the specific workshop.

7. Water

Stay hydrated.

This becomes particularly important during longer outdoor sessions.

8. A Small Camera Bag

You don't need a giant backpack.

A small, comfortable bag keeps your equipment accessible without weighing you down.

9. An Open Mind

This may be the most important thing you bring.

Be willing to experiment.

Try something unfamiliar.

Make mistakes.

Ask questions.

10. Your Curiosity

Street photography is about seeing ordinary things differently.

Bring curiosity and pay attention.

What You Don't Need

You probably don't need:

  • Five lenses

  • Huge tripods

  • Every accessory you own

  • Expensive new equipment

Keep it simple.
